WHAT IS PILATES?

Created by Joseph Pilates (1880- 1967) and originally called Contrology, the method was utilized in England during WWI to help prisoners of war rehabilitate through a regimen of exercises using innovative equipment.  Pilates created exercises that can be performed on the mat as well as on specialized equipment such as the Reformer, Chair, Arc, Barrel, and Cadillac. Off of the mat, equipment training incorporates spring resistance to add an extra element of challenge to traditional Pilates exercises. Sessions focus on core strength and controlled, flowing repetition of movements performed in conjunction with concentrated breathing.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PILATES?

  • Improved posture

  • Heightened awareness of the body

  • Better co-ordination and balance

  • Improved flexibility

  • Improved muscle tone & strength

THE INSTRUCTOR

I fell in love with reformer Pilates in 2010 and have been practicing it non-stop ever since. Having danced ballet, tap, and jazz from ages 3-8 years, Pilates felt much like a natural extension of my experience in dance. I am a trained instructor of Mat Pilates I and Reformer I & II through PHI Pilates, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. In addition, I completed my Cadillac/Tower, Arc and Barrel, and Wunda/Combo Chair trainings through Balanced Body at Pilates Reforming New York, New York City, USA. I am also certified in barre instruction and TRX® Suspension Training® . I hold a B.A. in Philosophy from The Pennsylvania State University, a M.A. in Liberal and Integrative Studies from the University of Illinois at Springfield, and a TEFL certification from the International TEFL Academy.  I enjoy working with a diverse base of clients to help them discover not only the physical benefits of Pilates, but the self confidence it builds as clients feel and see a difference in their body strength.

I teach Contemporary Pilates with positivity, humor, and energy. I believe in an inclusive, welcoming approach to fitness and place special emphasis on Joseph Pilates’ original principles of Contrology combined with challenging, innovative workouts. I pride myself on using effective cueing and visualization to help clients achieve the mind-body connection necessary to discovering core strength and mastering Pilates. While challenging and focused, I emphasize safety and stay in tune with a client’s needs. Using a sound basis of anatomy and physical alignment, I guide clients to recognize their physical potential and encourage them to acquaint themselves with their body’s own strength. I invite all levels of fitness to join my classes. My approach to Pilates instruction mirrors that of my life: Warmth, strength, positivity, and a genuine passion for what one does will bring about results one can take pride in. All sessions are taught in English.  Empower yourself through Pilates with Kate.

CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

"Kate's instruction is amazing. She's tough but encouraging and her competence and obvious love of her work shows." -Amy D., New York, NY

"I love Kate’s classes. I have taken Pilates by other instructors and she by far is my favorite! She is professional, knowledgeable, and I get an amazing workout every time. Kate works muscles that I never knew I had. Her exercises are never the same and she challenges you while encouraging you to do the best you can. I have really grown to love Pilates because of her ." -Jessica P., New York, NY

" 'Challenging but doable' was an inspiring motto that we had in Kate’s class. I have grown in strength and confidence largely due to my pilates sessions with Kate. I started pilates classes with Kate not having exercised for 3 years prior as I had developed adult asthma and was nervous but knew I had to build up my fitness again. I would almost exclusively choose Kate’s classes as I not only felt safe, but I enjoyed her sessions that usually left me feeling accomplished as she never let you cheat yourself of doing your best. If you’re hoping to get a jumpstart on your fitness journey or want to try some fun exercises to get stronger and more flexible, I strongly recommend pilates with Kate!" -Davina B., New York, NY

"I fondly remember my first class with Kate in NYC. It was clear she cared deeply about me and the other students: she pushed us all to learn good Pilates posture and technique, and kept the class fun and especially athletic. I was pleasantly sore the next day." -Mark F., New York, NY

"As someone who has been in the fitness Industry for over a decade, I am always looking for something new to challenge me. I found that challenge and a new love when I began to take one on one reformer lessons with Kate Symons. After my first session I was hooked.  Kate was not only extremely knowledgeable, but she made the sessions fun every week. Her thorough understanding of functional anatomy and her ability to modify exercises to accommodate past injuries is quite impressive. Whether it be a Pilates Mat, Barre or Reformer session it is always athletic and different. Her classes will leave you sore, tired and wanting more!" -Jenna M., State College, PA
